How old is this Fuzzy/Excel?

Post by Bill Johnson »

I just acquired this Fuzzy/ Excel D10 keyless.
The previous owner doesn't know when it was built.
I was curious if any Excel owners have a similar looking model and know the year it was built?
Sorry the pictures couldn't be better.
Thanks

If you could also share a photo of the pedals on this guitar, I might be able to give you an idea of whether it was made before or after a certain year.

I can't say the exact year with certainty, but I believe this guitar was made in the 1990s.

Toshiyuki,
That's a big help, at least in narrowing it down to a specific decade.
Thanks

Bill, when I acquired my Excel D-10 a year and a half ago, I scoured the internet and also concluded that it was from the 1990s. Similar to yours in many respects (with the major exception that it is keyed, not keyless), but a very different changer housing, pedal rods mount on the side and the star styled keyboard. Underside looks pretty similar, from a distance at least.

Yours looks like it has the same pull system that mine came with, in which the nylon tuners are fixed to the end of the rod, and thread into a nylon collar in the bellcrank. I ordered all new metal collars from Excel and switched the system out to a more conventional one: nylon tuners adjust at the end of the rod which locks into the collar with a set screw at the bellcrank.

Oh, and I love this guitar! Plays smoothly and sounds fantastic.

Dan, nice steel.
Mine plays and sounds great as well, just needs a little TLC.
I am considering doing the same with my tuners also. They are getting brittle and cracked with age.
I have it apart right now to give it a major cleaning of the changers to get rid of 30+ years of gunk.
I am also changing the knee levers from Day to Emmons.
Thanks for sharing.
